In December, the team at Barton Legal donated their service and time to non-profit organisation Make It Wild. Their purpose is to protect nature, creating wild spaces with trees, meadows, and ponds and encouraging greater enjoyment of the natural world.

As a team dedicated to improving environmentally friendly practices, we believe in coming together for the greater good of our shared planet.

Armed with gardening gloves, our team arrived at the nature reserve, eager to get their hands dirty for a great cause. Make It Wild provided over 100 sapling trees to plant, with the aim of providing shelter and food to local wildlife for decades to come, as well as being one of the best strategies for carbon mitigation. We also produced biodegradable mulch mats, supporting the healthy growth of these new additions to our forest.

Using protected-blade knives, the team removed non-decomposable materials from large cardboard boxes, including plastic tape and metal staples. After, the cardboard was cut into half metre squares centred with a Y shaped cut, perfect for making mulch mats.

Following this, we used shovels to carve individual holes in the ground, large enough for each of the 100 plus saplings to grow. A 5ft wooden stake supported the saplings to ensure healthy vertical growth, whilst the cardboard mulch mats were secured into place by piercing four treenails, to protect the soil around each sapling. The mats will slowly biodegrade over time, enriching the soil as the trees grow.

After hours of hard work, accompanied by harsh winds and driving rain, our day of disciplined efforts resulted in over 100 new saplings being added to the growing forest. It was an incredibly rewarding experience to contribute through measurable environmental action.

The Barton Legal team enjoyed bonding over this meaningful volunteer initiative, and seeing firsthand how our community comes together, to protect and serve the natural environment around us.

If your company is interested in organising a volunteer tree planting activity, we highly recommend you explore Make It Wild‘s impressive conservation programmes! By donating just one day of service, your team can participate in reforestation and sustainability efforts that will benefit the community for generations to come.
